about

Heavy occult rockers from Belgium. First vinyl release. Four dark, brooding and meditative dirges that build slowly, gaining intensity, only to fade back into the haunting emptiness.

"If I were compelled to choose one word to describe Ignobilis, the new album by Belgium’s Oldd Wvrms, it would be “psychoactive”. Yes, I mean that in the sense that it has powerful hallucinogenic properties akin to those of certain trance-inducing chemicals, but the music is capable of producing visions even for those who don’t have a taste for tripping. It sets the imagination roaming through esoteric landscapes populated by visions of witches and warlocks gathered at woodland rituals, shrouded in aromatic smoke and lit by the rising embers of preternatural flames. Or at least that’s what I imagine."
- NO CLEAN SINGING

"I hadn’t heard anything remotely weird for a while, but along came Oldd Wvrms. Their brand new album of “Ignobilis” is a unique blend of blackened doom that has the potential to attract the strange and unusual. Hell, even the band’s name and its spelling alone is out there enough to have immediately grabbed my attention. Oldd Wvrms truly know how to leave an impression before playing even a single note of music with that very dark cover art, but the nastiness and all the ominous feelings of the cover translate brilliantly into the music. The scant four tracks of “Ignobilis” manage to take up a whopping 40 minutes. The whole of this album is just so disturbing down to the very core yet has so accessible riffs and hooks that any fan of music can get into. Disturbing enough to satisfy those who want the full force of the darker side, and catchy enough for those who showed up for them sick beats. Oldd Wvrms left one hell of an impression with the opening track alone, then the whole album simply blew me away."
- Headbanger Reviews

"With slow, sludgy riffs the band proceed to hypnotise and entice with their rich, textured brand of murky delivery. This is not your run-of-the-mill simple or basic doom; this is music that’s been produced with thought and purpose. There’s plenty of heavy riffs on here, but the heaviness is only part of the recipe they have for producing Grade A metal; there’s a real sense that a lot of thought and consideration has gone into this music, and the band display a lot more nuance and grasp of subtlety than a lot of their peers. Oldd Wvrms also have a keen sense of atmosphere and dynamics, frequently altering pace and mood by dint of the progressive aspects in their sound. These songs grasp you almost without you realising; the dark auras and foreboding atmospheres that the band create instantly grab your attention, and before you’ve really had the time to think about what’s happened, you’re all the way down the rabbit hole with the band, wallowing in their darkness and wondering how they manage to weave the black magic that they do so expertly and insidiously. These songs are masterful examples of mood, atmosphere and dark heaviness, offset with enough light and shade to create music that’s wonderfully nuanced and with more depth in one song than many bands manage in an album. To go alongside the surprisingly varied music, the vocal delivery is just as well-considered and interesting, as well as being quite sparse comparatively speaking. It’s all used as an effective extra layer to the music, further enhancing the depth of what Oldd Wvrms produce. This is my first encounter with Oldd Wvrms and I must say that I’m extremely impressed. An essential listen for all fans of textured and emotive heaviness."
